Confessions of a Job Fair Jockey

When I came back to the office last week after recruiting at a job fair…I must confess that I had the job fair blues! I thought it was interesting how people present themselves at a job fair to potential employers. Perhaps it was because of the guy who told me he needed to work because he had too many girlfriends and they were costing him a lot of money…or the people that were interested in a professional administrative assistant position but had large visible tattoos of their zodiac sign on their chest…oh yeah, I can’t leave out the person who stole my mug full of mints when I turned my back for a few seconds. Needless to say, I was stunned.

In a recent article by Steve Giegerich, “Jobless are far from being freeloaders,” he mentions that the unemployed “don’t tend to exit state unemployment offices gleefully rubbing their hands at the prospect of blowing their $300-a-week benefit check on liquor and lottery tickets.”

I agree that majority of the population do present themselves to employers in a positive light and are diligently job searching, but after my experience at the job fair last week, I now see why some are still unemployed. Going to a job fair in pink slippers, sweat pants, a stained jacket and a low cut shirt that shows visible tattoos on the chest is a turnoff to most employers. Large visible tattoos are not going to open the door to a professional opportunity (if that is what you are looking for). This is an issue only for those tattoos that are exposed when clothing cannot cover them. Employers recognize that more and more people are sporting tattoos today and have started to create policies to address the issue.

Another thing to avoid is being unprepared. I had several jobseekers unload their folders and/or bags on my table, rummage through their things to find their resume, then paper clip or staple the pages together and then finally put it in my hand as the line of people grew and grew behind them!

I have realized that when I finish meeting 100+ candidates at a job fair, there are only 3-4 that really stand out in my mind as I am walking back to my car. That’s right… 3-4 people that I consider high priority targets.

Make sure you prepare for your next job fair! Practice your 30 second elevator speech, make sure your resume is stellar (and easily available to hand to the recruiter), cover visible tattoos, and be ready for action! Be among the 4% that get remembered when it’s all said and done. Recruiters know who came prepared and who did not. Bottom line? If you are seeking a professional position, make sure your overall presentation (attitude, outfit, hair, etc.) fits the part! Remember…first impressions are critical and can derail your chances of landing the job!

*See previous blog post for Job Fair tips!*

Follow these tips to make the most of your time on the job fair foor!

* Arrive Early. Keep in mind that lines can be long, so arrive early - before the fair officially opens.

* Network. While you are waiting in line, talk to others. You never know who might be able to help with your job search.

* Come prepared with your resume in hand. Do NOT go shuffling through folders or bags to locate your resume- this can make you look unorganized! Make sure that your resume is clean (coffee or soda stain free) and not folded.

* Shake hands and introduce yourself to recruiters when you reach the table. Demonstrate your interest in the company. Don't forget to make eye contact. We have seen some jobseekers stare at the table instead of looking at the recruiter.

*Be Enthusiastic. Employer surveys identify one of the most important personal attributes candidates can bring to a new position is enthusiasm. This means that employers want to see you smile!

* Take a deep breath and relax! Remember that most of the people around you are in the same situation- they are all jobseekers! It’s okay to be nervous, just work to keep it together. Be polite and professional.

* When asked “What type of job are you looking for?” so many people say "anything!" AVOID THIS!!! Be specific!

* Practice your 30 second elevator speech. Make sure you have it perfected before walking into a job fair. Recruiters are impressed when you come prepared!

* Dress for Success....Be sure your presenation is professional. Your clothes should be clean and crisp. No low cut shirts, short skirts, or scuffed shoes! Make sure tattoos are covered. Nails must be clean and trim. Hair should be well groomed and be sure the style is up to date.

* Turn off your cell phone so it doesn't ring during your conversation with the recruiter.

Be prepared and follow these tips for your next job fair!! Best of luck to all the jobseekers out there!

200 Questions for Job Candidates to ask a Company

Workforce Management recently posted a list of 200 questions that candidates may ask a company. Thought I would share the link in case you wanted to view the list! It gives good ideas on what to ask recruiters or hiring managers on your next interview!

Here are a few from the article:
1.Could you explain the company’s organizational structure?

2. What is the organization’s plan for the next five years, and how does this department or division fit in?

3. What specific skills from the person you hire would make your life easier?

4. Will we be expanding or bringing on new products or new services that I should be aware of?

5. What are some of the problems that keep you up at night?

6. What are some of the skills and abilities you see as necessary for someone to succeed in this job?

7. What would be a surprising but positive thing the new person could do in first 90 days?

8. What challenges might I encounter if I take on this position?

Positive Resume Builder Feedback

We are receiving great feedback from our Resume Builder Sessions! Below is an email from Madonna!

"Today I spent about 4 hours rearranging and editing my husband’s resume in accordance with your Resume Builder guidelines. The goal was to tailor it to match a position at ABC Company that he really wants.

You are geniuses!

About 10 seconds after I hit enter on the ATS at ABC Company using the new-improved resume it kicked back two successive emails. The first was the standard ‘thank you for applying’ email. But the second was a ‘your skills and qualifications exactly match the position’s requirements … you are currently being considered for the position’.

In other words, using NO subterfuge or truth-stretching your Resume Builder guidelines caused ABC Company's Applicant Tracking System to light up like fireworks when it scanned my husband's skills and qualifications.

Thank you for that training! I truly appreciate it.

"Dear Mrs. Huddleston,

It was a pleasure meeting with you yesterday. In my job search I have been working with several staffing agencies and I wanted to let you know that Staffing Solutions Inc. was the best experience! From speaking to Michelle over the phone, to the moment I walked through the door and was greeted by Lisa I felt comfortable working with Staffing Solutions. I didn't forget Les as it was great speaking with her and it is good to know Staffing Solutions offers training so I can brush up on skills as needed.

The Staffing Solutions Inc. staff is very personable and professional and I look forward to working with everyone in my career search!

Thank you and the entire team there again and I look forward to speaking with you soon!

Networking Event was a Success

The HR Networking event last night went GREAT and THANKS to everyone who came! Hope everyone had a good time and was able to make valuable connections! Have a fantastic weekend!

Mind your Manners....

The golden rule is to always treat people the way you want to be treated.....with respect. Never burn a bridge.

The best way to guarantee long-term success in job search is to lay the groundwork for a strong network of relationships. You may cross paths with the same people you do business or network with today in some other seemingly unrelated situation in the future.

Staffing Solutions, Inc. wishes we could find a job for everyone we speak to or meet...but unfortunately that is not possible. We respond to every resume we receive whether that be by email or by phone. Lately, we have been receiving very off putting emails and phone calls from angry job seekers. Here are a few situations we have encountered lately:

1. We thanked someone for sending their resume via email and said we will keep them in mind for future opportunities since we didn't have any positions that would be a match at that time. We let him/her know that the position he/she had applied was now closed. This person responded with a very angry email, and his/her last line was "did this position even exist?" This was very off putting and we will think twice about calling this candidate in the future.

2. Sometimes, it takes a few days for a company to get back to us after submitting a candidate's resume for an open position- the job process just takes some time. Recently, less than 24 hours after we sent a candidate's resume to a company, the candidate sent us a snappy email. The email stated that he/she assumed that the company AND SSInc are not interested in him/her." We informed the candidate that sometimes these things take a few days (or weeks!) and to please be patient.....a negative attitude can leave a negative impression.

3. Recently we have had a few candidates call or email us very angrily asking why we have not contacted them. We then go into our database and see that we have tried to call them 2-3 times in addition to sending an email, and they never responded to us. After several times of trying to get in touch with someone with no response, we assume that are not interested in us. Please keep a record of who you contact and who has responded before making accusations. (Keeping a record of contacts is also just good “marketing yourself” procedure)

4. A candidate called us at 8am last week in a raised (almost yelling) tone asking why we did not respond to his/her email, which had a resume attached. Turns out, the candidate mistyped our email so we never received it. Again, instead of angrily accusing, be polite and make sure we received it.

We know the job market is tough right now.....and job searching can be VERY frustrating and exhausting! For those of you who try hard to be positive, please know that recruiters do notice that and you will go places!! Positive, respectful candidates will be the ones to land jobs the quickest!

As your mother always told you, if you don’t have something nice to say, then don’t say anything at all. Staying away from any negative talk is always the best tactic. It’s not always easy to do, but remembering the Golden Rule and trying to Never Burn Bridges is a long-term strategy that is guaranteed to put you on the best path for future success.
