Casualties of the Jobs Crisis

St. Louis Post-Dispatch columnist, Steve Giegerich, has been covering the local unemployment scene since the economy dipped 3 years ago. Check out his fascinating story, along with a special report on “Jobless in St. Louis,” by clicking the link below:

St. Louis Post Dispatch

Concerned about the job market? You're not alone!

The job market looked like it was moving in the right direction during the first half of the year, but we have experienced many economic shocks which has caused the jobless rate to rise.

Hiring is down, and those who are unemployed are concerned and nervous because the job market is deteriorating. A lot of people who are currently employed are very uneasy about their job security and unhappy with their workplace! There seems to be a common theme: people, whether employed or unemployed, are fearful and anxious!

All current employer surveys are indicating that few employers are hiring full time, and most companies are hiring temporary workers instead. Our analysis shows that following a recession, 75% of our applicants who are offered full time positions, started as “temps”!!!

During these times, it is important that people remain patient and positive. Temporary/contract work will most likely be the best option for the unemployed.

Many employees facing or experiencing layoffs are unaware of the benefits of temporary/contract work.  A St. Louis Post Dispatch article recently stated that “the average jobless stint now lasts 10 months!“ With unemployment at 8.8% in the St. Louis metro area, temping may be the best way to stay working!

Benefits of temporary/contract work:

* Our positions pay more than unemployment! Unemployment in Missouri typically pays $8-9/hour, while our temp/contract positions pay between $11-28+/hour!

* You can still job search and interview while you are temping!

* Network...Network...Network!!

* Being in the "right place at the right time" may lead to full-time placement!!

* Stay Busy! It is important to stay busy and productive. Studies show when you aren’t actively engaging your brain that your brain activity slows down. This may affect your ability to interview well. Working will also improve your attitude and boost your confidence.
